Why Ecommerce Web Marketing Doesn’t Stop After The Holiday Season

The wrapping-up of the holiday season would usually mean a marketing halt for most ecommerce stores. Many online businesses assume the peak of storm has calmed, so they slack on their post-holiday sales strategies.

In today’s digital age, many the opportunities for ecommerce extend well beyond Christmas and into the new year. Below we outline a list of reasons why ecommerce web marketing and sales strategies should continue well beyond the holiday season.

Gift Cards: Ecommerce stores that offer gift cards should definitely keep up their web marketing efforts, however with a slightly different approach then a pre-holiday strategy. Consumers will be more apt to add more goods into their online shopping carts with incentives like "free shipping on purchases over $50" or "buy X amount, get Y for 50% off." These promotions will have gift card recipients checking-out with balances exceeding their gift card amount.

Inventory Clearance: The post-holiday season is a popular time for deal seekers. This is the ideal time to dedicate product categories to after-Christmas specials and post-holiday mark-downs. Not only can this help get rid of old inventory for next year's models, but this can also be a way to attract new customers through creative web marketing.

Complementary Shopping: A DVD player is not complete with a few favorite movies to enjoy. Many online shoppers are looking for complementary products to enhance the gifts that they have received during the holiday season. Particularly for digital devices, focusing on complementary shoppers and their motives is wise web marketing move.

Learn from the Holiday Storm: The evaluation of key online sales data after the holiday season, such as that of Google Analytics, can offer a wealth of information. Pinpoint strengths and weaknesses based on your ecommerce web marketing efforts over the holidays, and target specific areas to grow and improve.

The end of the holiday season does not mean the end of the shopping season for ecommerce businesses. Your web marketing and sales efforts should be refined and continued for several weeks beyond the peak of the season. Get creative and find ways that will incentivize the post-holiday swarm of shoppers.

Ecommerce Opportunities For Small Businesses

A decade ago, the idea of small business ecommerce seemed like an impossible dream. Only large companies and multinationals had the resources to utilize Internet servers, develop websites, and pay for web-hosting. This has changed drastically because of the way the IT industry has developed in the last few years.

Right now, there are various opportunities opening up for small business ecommerce. Any business can have a web presence and take advantage of its benefits to increase it customer base and revenue stream.

The main drivers behind the growing opportunities for small business ecommerce include cheaper software and website solutions. Not small businesses can take advantage of free products like Wordpress, or ecommerce specific products like Exponent. Several of these types of platforms offer many downloadable software tools that can help a small business execute online sales efficiently.

Cost-Efficient Ecommerce Opportunities

Other opportunities for small business ecommerce stem from the use of free web services to enhance customer connectivity and drive down costs. A small business owner can use electronic receipts and invoices to carry out business processes.

In addition, small businesses can have a fairly effective web presence by using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ to promote goods and services, and to create brand loyalty among their target customers.

Thirdly, the cost of running web services is reducing with improving technology. Therefore, even if a small business requires its own website under its own domain name, the costs are now affordable. The increasing bandwidth and speeds have made available multimedia applications that enable anyone to freely upload videos, slideshows, audio files, and animated materials at little or no costs.

These benefits translate to number of advantages for small business owners. First of all there is the possibility of increasing the speed of processing orders through small business ecommerce by allowing customers to order via email. Additionally, this reduces the need for customers to visit the actual store.

Small businesses can also take advantage of sending out electronic invoices faster than they would be able to send paper based ones. Not to mention the web offers small businesses many options for advertising. It is now easier to develop online marketing and advertising campaigns through Pay Per Click and SEO.

Lastly, a small business web ecommerce solution offers the ability to collect payments electronically. By using payment methods such as PayPal, it is possible to collect money without waiting for paper based currencies. The beauty of it all is that these options are very affordable and although they are designed for the large retailers, local small business are beginning to take advantage.

An Evolving Thing Called M-Commerce

M-commerce, also known as mobile ecommerce, is conducting business through Internet enabled mobile devices, particularly for the promotion and sale of goods.

In essence, M-commerce facilitates business transactions over wireless mobile devices. M-commerce relates to the sale of goods and/or services, which is initiated by using smartphone technology such as mobile apps and interactive mobile shopping carts.

Consumers are using their mobile devices to carry out their shopping needs. And even more prominent than actually making transactions, people are using their smartphones to research and comparison shop. Overall the opportunities to funnel sales using M-commerce are plentiful.

The applications for mobile ecommerce are vast. Below are just a few examples of how M-commerce has been put to work:

  • Purchasing and downloading music, games, and other form of media
  • Pinpointing goods and services in a local area
  • Researching and trading of stocks
  • Booking travel tickets
  • Managing financial and banking accounts

Mobile ecommerce has gained huge success in many markets and is projected to be the next major wave of ecommerce.

Consumers are headed toward an increasingly fast-paced lifestyle, and demand more efficient means to go about their daily tasks. That is why M-commerce is destined to be a major player in how we do business.

How To Adopt to Mobile Ecommerce

Mobile devices and social media are transforming the way consumers interact with both businesses and each other. The keyword here is "Social," because for many, the sharing information is what's important. In addition, the sharing of information is what facilitates greater awareness and unbiased promotion of certain products and services.

To get a jump on M-commerce, businesses should increase their presence in social networking sites such as Facebook, Google+, and Foursquare, since most consumers get connected to social media sites through their mobile devices.

Most mobile users are checking product prices, searching for store locations, and reading product reviews through their mobile devices. Therefore companies should design their websites so that customers are able browse their websites from their mobile browsers.

Furthermore, businesses should integrate their social media presence right along with their mobile-friendly optimization, because users are not only checking prices, but they are also "checking in" to tangible locations via smartphone apps like Foursquare.

M-Commerce is on the horizon to be the new front of how we handle business. Some speculate that the smartphone will soon replace the need for owning a wallet.

Entrepreneurs should start weaving mobile ecommerce in their strategic plans and start capitalizing on the mobile movement.

Yahoo Focuses on Mobile First

Yahoo announced earlier via a blog post that they are going to implement changes that will enhance the personal digital experience of its users. Yahoo stated that their aim is to go "mobile first," in which the company will focus on areas that are ripe for innovation drawn from their existing services.

In its effort to revolutionize its mobile presence, Yahoo had made some rather surprising sacrifices. The company has recently decided to shut down 10 of its existing mobile applications to give way to its mobile first ambitions. The list, which includes a mix of BlackBerry, Android, and iPhone apps, consists of those apps that are not performing as well as the company hoped.

The 10 apps for Android, Blackberry, and iOS that are being shut down are the following:

  • Yahoo Meme for iPad and iPhone
  • Yahoo Mim for iPad
  • Yahoo AppSpot for Android and iPhone
  • Yahoo Answers for Android
  • Yahoo Shopping for iPhone
  • Yahoo Deals for iPhone
  • Yahoo News for Android
  • Yahoo Finance for Blackberry
  • Yahoo Movies for Android
  • Yahoo Sketch-a-Search for iPad and iPhone

On the other hand, the company's mobile apps like Yahoo! Mail and Messenger, Sportacular, and Flickr, will not be affected by these changes. Yahoo's mobile team stated that people can expect more new Yahoo mobile services in 2012. Some of which includes a mobile TV companion called Livestand and an iPad magazine-style application called AppSpot.

Everyone is keeping their eyes close to the Internet giant as their new CEO Scott Thompson takes charge, it seems like the Yahoo is cleaning house with him. We'll see by the end of the year if the efforts and changes on Yahoo's business structure will result in it becoming more pop, or knock on wood, will make it flop. What do you think?

Tailor Customer-Oriented Web Services

Most unsuccessful small business owners fail to truly understand their customers. As marketer or owner of a business, understanding the true nature of your target markets is key. Market awareness results in better sales solutions that will suit there styles and needs.

By understanding your market, you can better build your website to have an interface which they can relate to. Knowledge about the customers also enables more efficient online (and off-line) marketing tactics, such as search engine optimization (SEO) and Pay Per Click. These strategies involve understanding the keyword phrases that customers may using when searching for your products online.

A Seamless & Secure Online Payment System

Small business owners planning to introduce ecommerce into their businesses must make sure their system is verified by major players in the online payment industry. This enables their customers have trust in them, as this displays signs of reliability.

Stemming from the latter tip about knowing about your customers, you must understand how your customers relate to your products. In turn, this allows you as the ecommerce marketer to create the appropriate checkout flow. For low-priced products, perhaps two-to-three pages consisting of data retrieval of customer's information and confirmation order page is all you need. For pricier items, more steps in the checkout process may be needed to instill that extra feeling of security.

Use Media To Help Sell Your Goods

Strong ecommerce stores provide a number of images of their products. Some of the most powerful e-retailers also include videos has product highlight. The use of rich media to help sell your goods is wise approach. This offers greater confidence in consumers, for they now what they are getting before they opt to buy.

Ask For & Show Customer Reviews

It is also important for customers who visit you website to be allowed to provide product reviews. By allowing the clients to do this, it gives you a chance to know which products are most popular and which ones are not. Also, most customers trust reviews from fellow customers, so good reviews can result in greater sales.

Ecommerce Fraud Prevention Reaching New Heights through MasterCard Initiatives

It has been predicted that US online shopping will grow at a steady rate of 10% every year, and by the year 2014 it would be 8% of the entire retail sales that happens that year in the country.

It has also been predicted that ecommerce in the European region will steadily grow at a rate of 11% during the same period of time. This unimaginable growth of ecommerce has brought along security concerns to all the players involved in a payment transaction. Cardholders are panicky about having their personal information compromised, and likewise are they worried if their financial transactions are indeed safe and secure. Similarly, card issuers also face the risk of ecommerce fraud and they have to bear huge costs in securing the payments.

The MasterCard Online Authentication Service, or OAS, is a service that covers the requirements of all the participants involved in an ecommerce financial transaction. The solution allows customers to be verified by the card issuers at the online point of purchase.

MasterCard issues this solution to card issuers on a turnkey hosted service basis and through participation in programs such as MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa. Thus issuers of MasterCard, Maestro, and Visa can use the facilities of MasterCard for their ecommerce fraud prevention measures, and spend minimally on their internal resources.

OAS ensures that the issuer satisfies the highest online security standards set by the financial industry. One of the strongest features of OAS is Expert Monitoring Fraud Scoring. This feature uses a combination of scoring, modeling, rules, and event management tools to predict a fraudulent transaction during the authentication process. The scoring system uses the Expert Monitoring Fraud Models to generate a predictive score when the authorization is in progress in real-time. The value of the score is indicative of whether the transaction is fraudulent or genuine, making the platform the ideal security system for ecommerce.

The security model used for fraud detection takes into consideration data on a global perspective, including:

  • Geographical models like region, country, etc,
  • Transaction type like whether ATM, ecommerce, debit, and so on
  • Product models like corporate, consumer, etc,
  • Proprietary like standard, affluent, etc.

Expert Monitoring Fraud Scoring uses the fraud models to predict the risk a particular ecommerce transaction after analyzing the spending patterns. The system uses a combination of Artificial Intelligence, a technology known as Smart-Agents, and a set of business rules to detect fraud patterns in an effective and quick way. The system continually learns and teaches itself new and evolving fraud patterns for future fraud detection.

This system was developed using the huge repository MasterCard has of globally integrated authorization and fraud data. The system relies extensively on the Network Fraud Models for evaluating risks across geography, transaction type, and products. Likewise, it uses Custom Fraud Models to detect risks using specific data within proprietary portfolios.

Thus, Expert Monitoring Fraud Scoring delivers an increased accuracy in fraud detection. It also smartly decreases the chances of false positives by issuing predictive fraud scores for every transaction in real-time, and the issuer factors the risk of fraud based on the score value during the authorization process; this greatly strengthens the relationship between cardholders and issuing companies.

Using the system, issuers have reduced their fraud losses by almost $24 million over a 3 year time period. Ecommerce merchants can feel safe since the card issuing company has authorized the transaction as being safe.

Leverage Price Comparisons for Ecommerce Optimization

Ecommerce OptimizationIn most online shopping situations, Internet shoppers tend to browse around and hop from ecommerce site to ecommerce site. Especially in cases when shoppers know exactly what they're looking for, it's common for people to visit multiple ecommerce sites to compare prices.

If you're an ecommerce marketer, you can learn to leverage price comparison features to better market your brand and optimize your ecommerce web presence. In essence, price comparison resources help users seek a solution to their needs, all the while positioning your ecommerce brand as a trustworthy source of information.

Using Price Comparison Features for Marketing

There are a number of advantages of using price comparison features to market your product line. One thing to keep top of mind is to understand that most common customers have high expectations and are much more meticulous.

Many shoppers will take the time to assess as much information they can on any specific product. This includes product details, pricing, and reviews, to name a few. Having this information in a presentable form is key to leveraging a cohesive comparison resource for your ecommerce marketing efforts.

Many online shoppers trust price comparison websites as they are independent and unbiased. These types of resources provide insights about products that have not been submitted by companies or individuals with any certain interests.

For this reason, it is important to present your price comparison web presence in a neutral manner. Some of the best ways to do this are using an independent domain (or website) or utilize other existing resources. Offering nuetral information is imperative for success.

Understanding The Market (Head) Space

It is also very critical to keep in mind that as online shoppers compare products on these resources, they're gaining knowledge and insights about other ecommerce brands and products and what makes them click centric. If you can earn their business via a price comparison web presence, your website can leverage their loyalty for the long-term.

These types of resources can also help you make improvements to your ecommerce optimization efforts. Price comparison resources and websites enable you to look at how other ecommerce stores are pricing their products, as well as additional incentives in which they may be offering. This can help you and your ecommerce marketing team optimize your company's web presence accordingly.

The trick is to get creative and determine what makes your offering unique and outstanding from the clutter. Price comparisons can be a powerful way to generate more business while bolstering your ecommerce brand.

Best Comparison Shopping Sites for Ecommerce Web Marketing

Ecommerce Comparison Shopping SitesAlmost every product niche, ecommerce web marketing is competitive battle. In addition to getting recognition and site traffic, realizing sales makes for a two-fold mission.

One of the most powerful avenues for ecommerce web marketing is getting your products listed in comparison shopping sites. This makes your inventory more accessible to a wider audience or new potential customers.

If your ecommerce website offers a solid value proposition (such as competitively low pricing, free shipping, or bundle/builk deals), you can thrive in using popular comparison shopping sites.

Below we share five comparison shopping sites that give online merchants high-volume online exposure.

1. Google Product Search/Google Shopping

No one can fault Google for deprecating Google Product Search in favor of its replacement Google Shopping. The Google Product Search was a free service, where ecommerce sites can submit their products for listing. It has since been replaced by Google Shopping which is a paid service. Google Shopping looks like a different service, and it is.

This paid service is worth the investment if volume is your objective. Google offers the largest audience of shoppers. Besides that, the service itself is growing faster than almost every other big comparison shopping site. As a result, it's become quite the web ecommerce solution for premium marketing.

2. Amazon Product Ads

Amazon Product Ads is a very popular click-through model. The listing sends the shopper to the internet marketer's website. This is separate from the Amazon Marketplace model, however, you can be registered with Marketplace and get the benefits of both an external site, and being listed inside the Amazon website.

3. eBay Commerce Network (Shopping.com)

Among online shopping sites, eBay has one of the largest following of independent internet marketers. Listing with Shopping.com uses the CPC model, and transactions are consummated at the marketer's external website. In addition, listing with Shopping.com also gets listed to Google Shopping.

4. Nextag

There are a lot of items which are for sale on the internet. Almost everything from mansions, cars, to small collectibles. Nextag is a paid service which allows for everything from household appliances to real estater. The wide range of products on the Nextag makes this worth it to get listed.

5. Bing Shopping

In search, Bing is a far third in terms of traffic. That does not mean that it should be left out of an internet marketer's list. On the contrary, as a free listing Bing Shopping gives a great ROI. It delivers traffic for free.

Since the mid-1990's, comparison shopping sites have evolved from simple “Yellow Pages” type directories, to massive auctions and online clearing houses. These days, there are still comparison shopping sites which look like simple inventory listings or search engine results lists, and there are those with more sophistication with features lists and reviews.

Some comparison sites are paid submission sites, while others are for free. It is up to the website owner to decide for themselves where and when to submit their lists to these comparison sites. Empower your ecommerce web marketing efforts and capitalize on the profit potentials some of these shopping sites offer.
